Rome Walking Tour 3
Our Art Historian Guide joined us at our hotel at 10:30.
As we left we realized the Hermes store opens rather late
We walked through a few side streets and ended up in the Artist Quarter.
This is the street where Artemisia Gentileschi lived. Sadly we don’t know which house but we know the street. I did walk up and down the street thinking one of the houses would call to me.
I liked the area however it was different during the time of Artemisia and Caravaggio. They lived in this area because it was in between the poor sections where they got their models from and the affluent section where their patrons lived.
One of the many Mussolini leftovers. Here is one of the fountains of the time of Mussolini. He left a rather large architectural legacy, this one also shows his failed attempt of changing the calendar.
Remember Mussolini's symbol bearing the fasces, the primary symbol of Italian Fascism. After Mussolini's execution by firing squad, the people of Rome went out and removed all the symbols of Mussolini's Fascism but all over Rome, you will see little leftovers.
The Flamino Obelisk is one of the thirteen obelisks in Rome. It is either the first or second to be brought to Rome under Augustus but it is the lost and found Obelisk. It came to Rome around 10 BC, probably tumbled over and was forgotten, and then found again in 1587. The Obelisk was broken into three pieces and erected by Domenico Fontant in 1589
Fontana del Bottino
Now we are on the way to the Spanish Steps. At the top of the steps, you see the Sallustiano Obelisk, which stands in front of the Church of Trinita dei Monti. and at the top of the Spanish Steps. We had taken the back way to avoid the heat and the tourists. The obelish is not a pharaonic obelisk. This one was constructed during the time of Emperor Aurelian.
Since you are no longer allowed to sit on the steps the place isn't as busy as it used to be.
House of the Monster also known as Palazzo Zuccari. The home was constructed by artist Federico Zuccari (1542-1609) it changed hands a few times and since 1912 is part of the Bibloteca Hertziana.
House of the Puppets, also known as Palazzo Crivelli. It was built by Gian Pietro Crivelli in 1538. He was a rich goldsmith from Milan and had the money to hire Giulio Mazzoni who did the richly decorated facade.
Beautiful entrance
Belinnie
The Pope's symbol and calling card is still on the building.
Interesting Church, what makes the church so interesting is nobody looked at the beautiful artwork. Every day people come in for mass, and the service is held every four hours. I need to read up more on this church.
The photos above do not capture the beauty of this church. As you can see we had to leave because service started.
Below is the House of Bellini, as you may know he wasn't a very nice person.
This is a side entrance of the Palazzo del Bufalo, it is sixteenth century building
It is one thing about Rome, don't forget to look up
Trevi Fountain is cleaned every Monday. All the money in the fountain goes to charity. One of the majors of Rom wanted to use the money to repair some of the historic buildings but the citizens of Rom were against it. In addition at one time, they found out that some guy would sneak in at night and take some of the money. They couldn't really prosecute him because well, from whom did he steal. Pretty interesting case.
