We decided to go to Akrotiri, the Pompeii of Greece. Around 1650 BC, a volcanic eruption occurred causing the center of Santorini to sink, leaving a caldera, and creating the shape of the island as we know it today. Much like with Pompeii there was an earthquake before the explosion. The difference in Pompeii was that the citizens had already returned and went about their everyday lives whereas in Akrotiri they had not.

Of course, I would love to go and hike Tholos Naftilos, the island of Santorini Volcanobut and swim in the Nea Kameni Hot Springs (it is said to make you feel ten years younger) but we will remain feeling old and go to Akrotiri instead, it just has to wait till next time.
Our tour started at 7:30 am and took about 4 hours. After visiting Akrotiri a coach took us back to Thira, where we visited the prehistoric museum.
Our guide was ok but I was glad I emailed my old history professor who happily forwarded me his lecture notes with other advice and tips.
From there is it about a three-minute walk to the cable car which will return us back to the port. The cable car is 6 euros and it is a better option than the donkey ride, or going down the 456 steps.
Our tour will finish at around 12:30 pm and our ship leaves at 5:00 pm which gives us enough time to check out the town of Fira. My history professor's favorite cafe is Cafe Amnesia. It was so hot so we decided not to trek all over town.
He also recommended a couple rooftop restaurants. Volcan is the closest to the cable car, which a beautiful view get for a sunset dinner. Plus, he said we need to drink the wine because of the volcanic soil the wine has a wonderful flavor. He was correct with everything including the hat recommendation.
