Curaçao

This morning, we arrived in Willemstad, Curaçao, a city bursting with color and history. Our first visit to this enchanting place was on January 4th, 2023, when we embarked on a captivating walking tour led by a local historian. Her vivid storytelling transported us back to the time when the Arawaks from South America were the first to settle on this vibrant island.

She painted a picture of the island's transformation under Dutch influence in the 17th century. Drawn by the island's strategic location, Dutch traders established Willemstad as a bustling trading port, a legacy that continues to shape the city's character today.

As we strolled through the charming old town, our guide regaled us with tales of the oldest synagogue in continuous use in the Americas, the Mikvé Israel-Emanuel Synagogue, founded in 1651. This historical gem stands as a testament to the enduring legacy of the Jewish community in Curaçao.

The tour also took us to the iconic Queen Emma Bridge, affectionately known as the "Swinging Old Lady." This floating pontoon bridge, painted a striking blue, not only connects the Punda and Otrobanda districts but also symbolizes the ingenuity and resilience of Dutch engineering.

With each step, we delved deeper into Willemstad's rich tapestry of cultures and histories, appreciating how the island's past continues to shape its vibrant present.
