Vestmannaeyjar Story

**The Fascinating Story Behind Vestmannaeyjar**

Vestmannaeyjar, or the Westman Islands, has a name steeped in history and drama. It all began with Ingólfr Arnarson, Iceland's first Norse settler, his wife, and their Irish slaves. The idyllic settlement turned violent when these enslaved men murdered Ingólfr's brother. Driven by vengeance, Ingólfr hunted them down and killed them in the area now known as Vestmannaeyjar. The name "Westman" comes from the Old Norse term "Vestmenn," referring to the Irish. Thus, the tragic tale gave the islands their enduring name.

Vestmannaeyjar is situated off the south coast of Iceland, a cluster of volcanic islands surrounded by the North Atlantic Ocean.  There are a couple of ways to reach Vestmannaeyjar. The Herjólfur ferry departs from Landeyjahöfn and takes about 45 minutes to reach the islands. If you're starting from Reykjavik, it’s a two-hour drive or bus ride to Landeyjahöfn. For a quicker but more expensive option, flights from Reykjavik to Vestmannaeyjar take just 20 minutes.
