Arrive: 7:00 AM Depart: 4:00 PM
The majority of visitors to Glacier Bay arrive by cruise ship. All road lead to Rome but none to Glacier Bay. You arrive either by water or air. This makes Glacier Bay a stepchild among North America's National Parks. Unlike Yellowstone or Yosemite, no road trip with a camper or trailer to Glacier Bay Park. There are very few visitor centers and lodges at the edge of the park, still Glacier Bay's biggest attraction is the colossal tidewater glaciers, best-viewable from the comfort of your balcony cabin.
Having said all that, Glacier Bay basically is a large, fjord-like body of water surrounded by glaciers, forests, and snow-capped mountains in the back, and it is best seen from the water, without leaving footprints. I was hanging out on my balcony cabin, drinking cappuccino and Glühwein, not leaving a footprint.
After the Fjords our next adventure will be a train ride to Anchorage.
Now there were a number of people out on kayaks. I could barely make them out with the binoculars and in the photo below there are just a few tiny red pixels.
Just to give you an idea of the size of things. In the photo below you can barely make out a motorboat, you can see clearly the transverse waves create across the photo, indicating it wasn't a small boat.
The following photos are from a fellow traveler to show what a good camera will capture. You can see the comparison of an iPhone versus a good camera here. They were the same blocks of ice.
I'm working on this post to show you the difference Iphone versus Camera
